Devotional: Thy Kingdom Come!

March 7th, 2010 by Pastor Marty | Print

Matthew 6:9-10 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven.

When Jesus taught us to pray “Thy kingdom come”, do you think he was speaking of a physical kingdom that would be setup her on earth at some point in the future, or do you believe that he was speaking of that future kingdom where we will all dwell after death (the place we commonly call heaven)?

What if I told you that I don’t believe either. I believe this kingdom, for which we are to pray, is a current present experience. In Hebrews 12:28 we read “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:” Notice that the writer says that we are, presently, receiving a kingdom. This kingdom is the righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy Ghost that is spoken of in Romans 14:17. The kingdom is not something for which we have to wait, but rather it is something that we can and should experience now. In God’s word we find a great deal about this experience.
